Start by making an outline on the siding where you want to position the ledger board.

When it comes to the deck a strip of flashing is brought down the wall of the house and over the top of the ledger the piece of dimensional lumber attached to the house at the edge of the deck.
This keeps the siding out of debris that may collect in the inside corner of the flashing and prevents mold from growing on it.
